Station VII

Gravel plain at dusk, lithops hiding among pale and brick stones.

Kingdom of stone

LITHOPS

Dark wet forest floor, a shaft of light full of spore dust.

Kingdom of soil

HUMUS

A living index of soil and stone.

01 — What we keep

We do not collect objects. We keep what refuses to stay still.

Field Station Humus sits between a gravel plain and a wet canopy. One side teaches camouflage. The other teaches contamination. The index is the argument they have not finished.

Visitors come looking for a garden. They leave with a core sample and a sentence they cannot paraphrase. That is the work.

A cluster of living stones, split bodies in champagne, sage and brick.

02 — Stone

HIDE

Lithops does not perform. It waits until it is the ground. Display type, display life — one word, then silence.

03 — Soil

writes

Humus is not dirt. It is a slow intelligence: leaf, bone, thread, rain. Knowledge here has no center. It fruits, then disappears into the next sentence.

Cream mycelium threads spreading through wet leaf litter.
04

INDEX

Six findings currently on the public table. The rest stay in the dark until they can fruit again.

Gravel plain, lithops hidden among stones.
01

HIDE

Camouflage as method. Walk the gravel until the stones look back.

Cream mycelium threads on wet leaf litter.
02

hyphae

A network outlives a monument. We publish threads, not theses.

Split brick-red iron stone beside a living lithops.
03

IRON

The wound that orients the map. Brick is a mineral, not a brand color.

Soil core sample, cream to iron strata.
04

CORE

Five pigments, one cut. Read the strata as a sentence.

Spore print on champagne paper.
05

spore

Publication as dispersal. What leaves the cabinet must be able to grow elsewhere.

Dark wet canopy after the lights go.
06

DUST

Night soil. What grows after the visitors leave, and the lights are a bad idea.

05

WALK

Four gestures. Not a process diagram. If it fits on a slide, it is already dead.

  1. 01

Walk the gravel until the stones look back.

Camouflage is not a metaphor. You will miss the subject twenty times. The twenty-first time it was always there.

  2. 02

Lift the leaf litter. Do not wash your hands.

Contamination is the method. Hyphae do not respect clean rooms. Neither does a useful sentence.

  3. 03

Cut a core. Read it as a sentence.

Champagne, chlorophyll, sage, hunter, brick. Depth is grammar. The iron band is punctuation.

  4. 04

Publish only what can fruit again.

A bulletin is a spore print. If it cannot leave a mark on someone else’s paper, keep it in the dark.

NOTE

From the seasonal bulletin. Written after rain, filed before it dries. Read the issue →

Field table: open notebook, brass loupe, iron stone, a lithops in gravel, a vial of soil.
Plate 11 — The public table, before the third rain.

The stones opened overnight.

Not a bloom — a mouth. We counted fourteen splits on the east gravel. No one heard them. Lithops does not announce.

Hyphae crossed the catalog drawer.

A thread found the iron sample and refused the label. We left it. The index is more honest when it contaminates itself.

Two visitors. One sentence.

They asked for a tour. We gave them a core and the rule: three words, then silence. They wrote from the road. The letter is still wet.
